Chapter 2: Connecting your Computer to the Internet. |

Modem with Ethernet port

In this guide we will connect your router to the Internet. In order to complete this step you must have an Ethernet-based broadband connection.

Connect one end of the Ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port on the back of your router

Connect one end of the Ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port on the back of your router.

Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your modem's LAN port

Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your modem's LAN port.

The WAN light is now lit
|

Check the lights on the front of the router; the WAN light is now lit.

Log into the router's configuration page and configure the router
|

Log into the router's configuration page by opening Internet Explorer and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address field, then hit Enter. A login box appears - the user name is admin, and password is the password. Click ok.

Input the details of your broadband account
|

Input the details of your broadband account. If you're not sure of any details, ask your ISP.
|
| Step 7: |

Set a new SSID for the router
|
|
Click wireless settings, and type a new SSID in the SSID field; this will identify your wireless network and distinguish it from others that might be in the area. Here we call the network my_new_network. Click Apply.

Ok, lets get surfing the web! Open Internet Explorer, type a web address (digidave.co.uk) into the address bar, and hit Enter. Success! Your new network is connecting to the web.
